LIVE REVIEW ASHES DIVIDE - PROJEKT REVOLUTION - CAMDEN, NJ

 |  Posted on 9/2/2008

“On Projekt Rev, Ashes Divide….

Billy Howerdel, who formed A Perfect Circle - was really impressive, and appealed to my affinity for what I like to call "Tool Lite." I loved A Perfect Circle. I loved the melodic, floaty feel to their tunes, some of it a bridge over from the similarly-feeling, yet much harsher, sounds of Tool that Maynard Keenan brought to the band. Though with Ashes Divide, it now becomes easier to see where a lot of the band's - both bands - sounds have originated. Onstage, the backdrop and lighting, the use of the fog machine, all lends nicely to the "feel" of Howerdel's music, and I really enjoyed Ashes Divide's set. His chosen touring band is excellent, and they lend a nice charisma to the stage without overshadowing the more serene Howerdel as he plays and sings his songs. With the past popularity of A Perfect Circle, and the never-ending love of Tool, I can easily see how Ashes Divide has quickly gained a foothold in the music scene, and I feel it's well-deserved. Maybe they are not the most complex arrangements Howerdel has ever written, but it's good, good feeling music any way you look at it. Another good choice for this tour, definitely.”

MAMMOTH PRESS REVIEW OF ASHES dIVIDE AT CINCINNATI PROJEKT REVOLUTION

MAMMOTH PRESS REVIEW OF ASHES dIVIDE AT CINCINNATI PROJEKT REVOLUTION

 |  Posted on 9/2/2008
Having been in A Perfect Circle, one would expect frontman Billy Howerdel do be the stereotypical rockstar. This couldn’t have been any further from the truth. He humbly thanked the crowd for showing up early to see his “little band of merry music makers.” Most were unfamiliar with his material, but near the end of his set, it appeared that he had won the crowd over. Later, at his signing at the Island Def Jam tent, there was a long line waiting to talk to the band, take pictures, or just shake his hand. He could have left early, but he stayed for nearly an hour talking to everyone who wanted to talk.

LIVE REVIEW ASHES DIVIDE - PROJEKT REVOLUTION - IRVINE, CA.

 |  Posted on 8/12/2008
GREAT REVIEW OF ASHES dIVIDE PLAYING LIVE ON PROJEKT REVOLUTION AT THE VERIZON WIRELESS CENTER IN IRVINE CA POSTED ON ARTIST DIRECT

"After Street's tribal drumming finished, Ashes Divide flew the crowd back to outer space. Helmed by A Perfect Circle mastermind Billy Howerdel, Ashes Divide played a set filled with slow, warm guitars and intriguing, strange choruses. The band kicked things off with "The Stone" from their debut, Keep Telling Myself It's Alright. Howerdel has certainly come into his own as a frontman; he stood center stage smoothly playing and singing simultaneously. He gyrated to the hazy melodies the band created, while vocally carrying the choruses of "Prey" and "Stripped." To his left, guitarist Andy Gerold simply shredded, providing the perfect technical complement to Billy's "feel"-based style."

LIVE REVIEW- "RISING FROM ASHES BY CAM SMITH"

 |  Posted on 7/21/2008

Rising from Ashes

By Cam Smith, Associate Staff Contributor

www.the-peak.ca

“Taking the stage around 10:30 p.m. — Howerdel in a blood-red dress shirt and pants, and his backing band in black suits and ties — Ashes Divide wasted no time in setting a foreboding tone for the evening. The set began with the album’s closing track, “Sword,” starting the concert with an unsettling funeral dirge-like arrangement of keyboards and violin samples which swelled into a swirling sea of buzzing guitars and propulsive drumming. Handling lead vocals for the first time, Howerdel’s breathy singing voice was equal parts calming and disquieting. Mournfully half-whispering the lines “Don’t let them silence you / ‘cause you’re a waste in their eyes / There’s a grace inside of you / I need tonight,” he seemed to cast his gaze beyond the audience, towards something unseen and intangible. It was a stunningly effective prologue for the evening.

Following with the more up-tempo songs “Enemies” and “Denial Waits,” the group proved equally adept at revealing a vigorous apprehensive fury, which had the audience raising their fists and bobbing their heads in a wave of cathartic energy. Yet, it was the band’s performance of the melancholy rocker “Too Late” which was the arguable highlight of the evening. Blanketed in a haze of green and red light, Howerdel solemnly pledged to “not lose you to the melting sky / Or to the mad parade / To the bloody jaws or the fire fall” before regretfully declaring “If I could separate me from myself, I’d stay away from me,” the band had their spectators in a state of glowing euphoria.

The rest of the night consisted of a tightly wound set that ran through every track of Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright, as well as a surprisingly teeth-baring cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” Closing with first single “The Stone,” the band showed a level of professionalism uncommon for a group in such early infancy. Through a masterful combination of controlled chaos and unabashed emotional vulnerability, Ashes Divide is the antithesis of most modern rock. The musicians are genuine, lacking the inflated egos of the typical rock band, which results in a greater feeling of identification with the band for the audience. The look of modest bashfulness that flashed across Howerdel’s face whenever the audience enthusiastically roared with approval spoke volumes.

As the crowd departed the venue, there was a real sense of exhilaration in the night air. We had all shared a collective immersive experience that only the best rock concerts are able to deliver. Ashes Divide earned several dedicated fans that evening that will hopefully converge again when the band next sees fit to revisit this vicinity. As I said to my friends Shaun and Tommy afterwards, it was worth double what I paid. And with today’s concert prices, how often can any of us say that?”

Spreading the Ashes: An Interview with Billy Howerdel of ASHES dIVIDE

 |  Posted on 6/30/2008

Type 3 Media Interviews: Spreading the Ashes: An Interview with Billy Howerdel of ASHES dIVIDE

During my recent trip to New York, I had the pleasure of seeing ASHES dIVIDE perform at the Dysfunctional Family BBQ in Herkimer. Their performance was incredible. Billy Howerdel appears to have easily taken on the role of frontman. His vocal style is reminiscent of 80's British pop, but the music is fresh and current. More importantly, the crowd went raving mad for it.

Several days later I had the opportunity to talk to Billy Howerdel about ASHES dIVIDE, Keep Telling Myself It's Alright, and life on the road.

Type 3 Media: I recently got to see you guys perform at the Dysfunctional Family BBQ in Herkimer, New York.

Billy Howerdel: Cool. That was a great show for us. It was a good reaction from a big crowd.

T3M: What was different about working on the Ashes Divide material vs. A Perfect Circle?

BH: The vocal part is a big difference... writing lyrics... taking center stage for this. It's all just like starting over again. It's going back trying to figure things out while playing little shows trying to get the word out. As far as getting people to the shows, we have a lot of work to do spreading the word and traveling around.

T3M: What direction were you trying to take with Ashes Divide?

BH: It was a lot of things inside me that I couldn't do with A Perfect Circle. And some things that I could.

T3M: It looks like your band is gelling pretty well, and you looked comfortable in that center stage spot. How big of an adjustment has that been for you?

BH: I think it was a bigger adjustment with the guitars... really trying to figure out how to play and sing at the same time, and trying to do it where it's second nature and not having to think about it. I set it up so we had like two months rehearsal to try and figure it out. I think everyday it gets a little bit more comfortable for me. That's the everyday experience from being on the road. It's really fun. I think the band sounds really good, and every day it grows. I wanted to stay pretty close to the record for right now with the songs we play. We're also doing a cover song that's just kind of growing every day.

T3M: How is the band handling life on the road together?

BH: Really good. My friend asked me that too. Those guys didn't know each other either... just personality-wise. It's fun. All of us like to be here, and everything is turning out really good so far.

T3M: How is your voice holding up?

BH: Good, no problems so far, knock on wood. There have been no issues; no one is getting sick around me.

T3M: It must help that it's a spring/summer tour.

BH: Yes, absolutely. I talk to Maynard quite a bit and sometimes ask about how he handles certain things, and he'll give me advice on what to do, or what not to do, so I don't destroy my voice.

T3M: Have you had a chance to hear his Puscifer project.

BH: I have. I really like what he's doing with it. I think that was something inside of him that he wanted to get out, and he went in a direction that many people did not expect.

T3M: I hear a lot of British influence in your singing style.

BH: I think that the way we express ourselves comes from those things that influence us. I used to listen to a lot of new wave or darker post punk bands like Echo and the Bunnymen, Souxie and the Banshees, and the Cure. When you grow up in England you don't speak French.

T3M: You'll be joining the Projekt Revolution tour soon; what are you looking forward to most about it?

BH: That's going to be great. I'm really looking forward to that. I've done a lot of summer tours. The whole traveling circus vibe is kind of cool. We are going to be in a really good spot, opening the main stage. We're all really looking forward to that. With this tour, we're doing a lot of our own shows in smaller markets. Typically a tour will start and you want to go out and get major markets first. Have that show and some hype that trickles down into the smaller cities. We're kind of going the opposite way, starting in smaller markets, like in Pennsylvania or South Carolina. The reason for that is during Projekt Revolution we're going to be doing those major markets later. So right now it's this thing that is very intimate small shows. It's cool. It's a different experience.

T3M: You mentioned that a lot of what you're doing now is getting the word out about ASHES dIVIDE. How did you react to the fairly strong debut of your new album?

BH: I honestly haven't paid a whole lot of attention to what the record is doing. I really wanted to focus on the live stuff. I think that's going to be the thing that holds it together. I'm really proud of this record a lot. I'll take whatever we can get.

T3M: It was good talk to you.

BH: Thank you very much for spreading the word.

Spreading the Ashes: An Interview with Billy Howerdel of ASHES dIVIDE

 |  Posted on 6/30/2008
Type 3 Media Interviews:

Spreading the Ashes: An Interview with Billy Howerdel of ASHES dIVIDE

During my recent trip to New York, I had the pleasure of seeing ASHES dIVIDE perform at the Dysfunctional Family BBQ in Herkimer. Their performance was incredible. Billy Howerdel appears to have easily taken on the role of frontman. His vocal style is reminiscent of 80's British pop, but the music is fresh and current. More importantly, the crowd went raving mad for it.

Several days later I had the opportunity to talk to Billy Howerdel about ASHES dIVIDE, Keep Telling Myself It's Alright, and life on the road.

?Type 3 Media: I recently got to see you guys perform at the Dysfunctional Family BBQ in Herkimer, New York.

?T3M: How is your voice holding up?

BH: Good, no problems so far, knock on wood. There have been no issues; no one is getting sick around me.

T3M: It must help that it's a spring/summer tour.

BH: Yes, absolutely. I talk to Maynard quite a bit and sometimes ask about how he handles certain things, and he'll give me advice on what to do, or what not to do, so I don't destroy my voice.

ENEMIES TO BE THE NEXT SINGLE!

 |  Posted on 6/20/2008

The headline pretty much says it all!

Check out article here from revolt-media:

From Billy:
“With this project, with Ashes Divide, I kind of set out to do a couple of things in the beginning. One of the things was to write in a faster tempo than I’m normally accustomed to writing in. You know, I usually kind of gravitate toward the slower, dirgier kind of thing. ‘Enemies’ is on the top end of the tempo spectrum, I guess, for this record.”

ASHES dIVIDE Completes Perfect Circle In Music For Howerdel

 |  Posted on 6/3/2008

Billy Howerdel, former guitarist and songwriter with A Perfect Circle has carried on with a new musical direction with his latest project, Ashes Divide. Ashes Divide released their debut album, 'Keep Telling Myself it's Alright' in April and although the album showcases most every instrument being performed by Howerdel, it does features the legendary Josh Freese on drums, Devo Keenan on cello who is the son of Tool's Maynard James Keenan, Dean Menta, Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano, Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba and former A Perfect Circle bassist Paz Lenchantin.

Billy Howerdel has certainly taken some unorthodox steps to get where he is today as a musician and he's seen many different sides of the music industry. Before forming A Perfect Circle and even before being a guitar tech for bands like Guns N' Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, David Bowie, The Smashing Pumpkins and Tool, Howerdel was also a lighting designer and he knows what it takes to put on an entertaining show.

We caught up with Howerdel just before beginning his tour with Ashes Divide in support of 'Keep Telling Myself it's Alright' to find out if he always had a desire to be onstage.

"I didn't have it back then. I didn't really have that 'I want to be on stage' kind of bug. I just wanted to be around this. You know like around, I can't imagine doing anything else. I'm sure one day maybe I will but I just always wanted to be around the show in one form or another. As I was a musician when I started doing lighting early on I just started playing guitar and just started writing songs. I always kept writing songs and eventually they got a little more solidified and then got the courage up to show them to other people and it brings me to today in a roundabout way. Meeting people or having, when you work for bands or are in a band you have access to other people and one things falls into place after another. It's a strange path to take to be a musician but it just organically happened the way it happened."

On the strength of the single 'The Stone,' "Keep Telling Myself it's Alright' debuted on The Billboard 200 Chart at #36 and we also wanted to know if charts mean as much to Billy as they used to, in this day and age of digital downloads.

"It's funny when the first Perfect Circle record when it came out we got hourly reports of what the sales where in this city and that city and then the next record was like you know a little less as people were stop paying for records more and more. And this time I called at like 4 in the afternoon, I called management 'So, what's up?' and he goes 'Well...' It's not the samething as it was in the past when you were like looking at what it's going to be. This is more, this is my 18 month, start of an 18 month thing where I go on the road. It's just a whole different world than it was years ago."

Billy Howerdel held auditions for the touring lineup for Ashes Divide and he chose Jeff Friedl on drums, Matt McJunkins on bass, Andy Gerold on lead guitar and Adam Monroe on keyboards. Ashes Divide is set to hit the road for a run of small club shows beginning May 9th in Jacksonville, Florida as well as make an appearance at Rock on the Range May 17th in Columbus Ohio. Ashes Divide is also booked on Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution 2008 tour as they will be opening the main stage at each stop. Joining Ashes Divide and Linkin Park on the Main Stage is Chris Cornell and The Bravery. On the Revolution Stage is Atreyu, 10 Years, Hawthorne Heights, Armor For Sleep, and Street Drum Corps. 2008's Projekt Revolution Tour begins July 16th in Mansfield, Ma and extends until August 24th in Woodlands, Tx.

ASHES dIVIDE Takes To Road For First Tour

 |  Posted on 5/12/2008

As he takes his new ASHES dIVIDE on the road, Billy Howerdel calls the project "a work in progress. I'm ready to grow with this band." But he's not ready to say the touring edition of ASHES dIVIDE will turn what was essentially a solo project into a full-fledged band.

"I don't know about that," Howerdel, who also co-founded A Perfect Circle with Tool's Maynard James Keenan, tells Billboard.com. "I've been asked that, but I haven't given much more thought to it. These guys have really digested this music for awhile, so it could be we fall into that place where it does become [a band].

"I've got to see what they bring to the table. I haven't really gotten into where every guy is coming from. I don't know that we're coming from the same place or not. The focus right now is to get the live shows solidified, and I think it'll be down the road when I think about other things."

He'll have plenty of time to suss out his bandmates. After a couple of "practice shows" in Los Angeles, Howerdel and company kick off the first ASHES dIVIDE tour Friday in Jacksonville, Fla. The group also has opening dates for Filter, 3 Doors Down and Stone Temple Pilots as well as an appearance at the Rock on the Range festival May 17 in Columbus, Ohio, and a main stage slot on this year's Projekt Revolution tour, which begins July 16 in Mansfield, Mass.

Howerdel says the group -- guitarist Andy Gerold, bassist Matt McJunkins and drummer Jeff Friedl -- was assembled after auditioning more than 100 musicians. And even though he has plenty of famous friends from not only A Perfect Circle but also his work as a tech for Tool and Guns 'N Roses, Howerdel says he wanted "musicians who were fresh and hungry and didn't have a lot of experience. It's like starting all over again; everybody's psyched to be on tour, psyched to be on the bus, psyched to be playing shows."

He adds that ASHES dIVIDE's shows will focus on songs from the debut album, "Keep Telling Myself It's Alright," but the group is also working on some covers he hopes to weave into shows early in the tour.

As for A Perfect Circle, Howerdel says that the group is not dead but will have to wait until he's ready for a break from ASHES dIVIDE and Keenan has time away from Tool and Pucifer.

"We've talked about doing some stuff in the future," Howerdel says. "I don't know that it will take the same form we had before; we might just do a song or two. Right now my full focus is on ASHES dIVIDE."

Check Out ASHES dIVIDE On Rockline This Monday!

 |  Posted on 4/11/2008

We don’t know if Billy Howerdel’s new band is rising from the ashes of A Perfect Circle or not, because we aren’t completely certain that APC has pulled the plug. We do know that there has been talk that they are simply on hiatus. Time will tell. We know there has also been talk of a solo album from Billy in the rumor mill for quite some time. Billy will be the first to tell you that “Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright”, the debut from Ashes Divide, really isn’t a solo album in the traditional sense as there are many others who help out, notably drummer extraordinaire Josh Freese and Concrete Blonde’s Johnette Napolitano. Also joining the proceedings are Maynard James Keenan’s son Devo on cello, legendary Nine Inch Nails and APC member Danny Lohner and Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio. But the truth is that this is a magnificent display of Howerdel’s immense and diverse talents as he sang, played bass, handled the guitar work, laid his hands on the keyboards, ordered the sandwiches and coffee and turned off the studio lights every night. Other than that…..

Billy has his touring band together with Jeff Friedl on drums, Matt McJunkins on bass and Andy Gerold on guitar. Good thing too as they have some May concert dates scheduled and then embark on Linkin Park’s annual summer bash, Projekt Revolution, with many of our frequent ROCKLINE guests including, Atreyu, Chris Cornell and 10 Years (joining us May 12 with the national radio premiere of their new album). With just a few clicks and keystrokes you can join Ashes Divide online at www.AshesDivide.com and www.MySpace.com/AshesDivide and by simply turning on your radio, or joining us online, you can directly connect with the ultra-talented Mr. Howerdel on the next edition of ROCKLINE as he serves as tour guide for one of the most outstanding releases we’ve heard in years. There are eleven shimmering, seductive and sensuous new songs included on “Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright” and we plan on making every effort to play seven songs in their entirety and abridged “teasers” of four others, while still allowing some time for you to help us interview Billy and learn as much as we can about this compelling album.

Join us for an extraordinary evening with Billy Howerdel of Ashes Divide exclusively on our next ROCKLINE!

ASHES dIVIDE Featured On Artist Direct

"...you can feel Howerdel reaching deep inside his guts to pull out these songs. There's an air of sincerity that permeates every note of songs like the pulsating "Denial Waits" and the slow 'n sexy "Too Late." These songs make it clear why the revered MJK was so quick to work with Howerdel. He's a talent."

A Perfect Circle, Album Features, And Video Treatments: Billy Howerdel Sits Down With MTV.com

 |  Posted on 1/22/2008

Guitarist Billy Howerdel, perhaps best known as the creative strength behind avant rock outfit A Perfect Circle, is in video-treatment hell. He's thumbing through a ton of ideas, and his head is spinning.

"Most of these treatments are so fantastical and abstract," he explained, adding that pinning down a music-video concept for the song "The Stone" is just one of a myriad of items currently on his to-do list. "Reading video treatments is like pounding your head with a hammer. It's tedious and laborious and confusing at times. It's like, 'So, I'm going to be wearing a red tutu, waving a machine gun from the top of the Eiffel Tower?' I don't think so."
